Historical carriage from Ratibořice Castle: a jewel of Czech hunting history

January 21, 2025  /  7:29 AM

At the National Gamekeeping Exhibition 2025, we will present a unique carriage from the Ratibořice castle, known from the filming of the famous movie Grandma based on the novel by Božena Němcová. This historical gem was custom-made in 1889 by the Viennese master G. Lehner.

The carriage was designed for the noble family of the time. It served not only for comfortable travel, but also for hunting expeditions. While the younger members of the nobility often set out on horseback, the carriage comfortably accommodated up to 12 people.

The carriage is characterised by its generous space for the crew. Three people can sit on the wide trestle. Eight passengers sit on benches inside the carriage, richly padded, four on each side. A twelfth passenger, usually someone younger, had a special place on the "neck" of the carriage behind the trestle. There was a dog cage under the trestle and access to the rear of the carriage was facilitated by patent folding steps. These were designed so that ladies would not have to take long steps in their skirts. The carriage also included armorial harnesses.

In the 1980s it was harnessed to the famous Humburky races, where an incredible 21 horses pulled this masterpiece. This historic carriage is not only a symbol of the elegance and ingenuity of its time, but also a witness to important events in our history. Come and see it and be enchanted by its story.
