EXLEBESA: Global leader in the extrusion and manufacture of aluminium profiles

August 6, 2024  /  12:50 PM

Exlabesa is a multinational global leader dedicated to the extrusion and manufacturing of high-value aluminium industrial components for the most demanding sectors: construction, automotive, transport, infrastructure and renewable energies. With a history of more than half a century and a commercial presence in 40 countries, the company currently has ten production centres strategically located in the United States, England, Morocco, Germany, Poland, Portugal, France and Spain.

The vertical integration of the entire aluminium production process allows Exlabesa to complete the full cycle: from the development and manufacture of fully finished, high-quality industrial components to packaging, delivery and recycling.

With 29 presses ranging from 1300 to 8500 tonnes, Exlabesa’s production capacity has reached 238 000 tonnes of extruded aluminium while carrying out all the processes internally. The machining and finishing capabilities include 32 high-precision CNCs, 3 large-format bending centres (up to 23 m), 12 thermal breaking lines and 5 anodising lines that can treat profiles up to 14 metres long, in compliance with Qualanod's demanding quality standards. It also has 11 coating plants for profiles up to 14 metres long in a wide range of finishes, backed by Qualicoat - Seaside & Qualimarine certifications.

However, one of the company's main strengths that sets it apart in such a competitive market is its extraordinary macroextrusion capabilities. Thanks to Exlabesa’s ongoing commitment to technological and industrial development, it has become a world leader in manufacturing large, technically complex aluminium profiles. Operating two of the largest extrusion presses in Europe - 6500 and 8500 tonnes –Exlabesa is able to extrude large sections up to 700 mm wide, 28 000 mm long and 120 kg/m with the experience, technology and value-added services to satisfy the needs of its customers, as well as meet the most demanding industrial challenges.

The company’s latest efforts in innovation are directed towards the circularity of aluminium, an infinitely recyclable metal and key to a sustainable present and future. Exlabesa operates several state-of-the-art recycling plants, including one of the largest and most advanced in Europe, to produce more than 80 000 tonnes of recycled billets per year, which helps to greatly reduce the carbon footprint and energy use compared to the manufacture of primary aluminium.

The RE-local billet has a carbon footprint of just 2.95 kgCO2 eq per kg of aluminium, verified by Bureau Veritas according to the ISO 14067 standard. Exlabesa’s comprehensive recycling process, from collection and smelting to extrusion, promotes a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable industry with high-quality recycled billets. This has had a significant effect on reducing the environmental impact and extending the life cycle of aluminium, contributing to the advancement of the entire industrial sector.
Thanks to its pioneering vision in macroextrusion and sustainability, Exlabesa has consolidated its position as a global benchmark, driving innovation and leading the way towards a more efficient and sustainable future.

Exlabesa boosts circular industry with its recycled low-carbon aluminium RE-local

- RE-local recycled aluminium has a low carbon footprint of only 2.95 kg CO2 eq/kg Al. verified by the prestigious certification company Bureau Veritas.

- The RE-local billet represents a significant step towards the decarbonisation of the industrial sector, as it allows drastic reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Exlabesa, a global leader in the extrusion and manufacture of aluminium profiles, has taken a key step towards sustainable industry with the launch of RE-local. This recycled aluminium billet has a carbon footprint of only 2.95 kg CO2 eq/kg Al verified by Bureau Veritas according to ISO 14067: Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). This means a significant reduction of 82% compared to primary aluminium consumed in Europe.

RE-local integrates into Exlabesa's production process to extrude new profiles, offering high quality products with an extremely low carbon footprint and thus contributing to the decarbonisation of the sector.

Aluminium is an essential material for the future of industry thanks to its technical properties, such as lightness and durability, and its infinite recyclability. The process of recycling aluminium eliminates the need to mine new ore and, at same time, allows a 95% reduction in electricity consumption compared to primary aluminium, which drastically diminishes its ecological impact. In addition, aluminium, recognised as a strategic raw material by the European Union, has a key role in industrial sectors such as construction, transport and technology, but also plays a key role in the transition to a more sustainable economy.

Exlabesa, with its state-of-the-art recycling plants and cast houses, has one of the largest current recycling capacities in Europe with over 80 000 tonnes of recycled billet per year. These unique capabilities allow the multinational company to take on any project with the maximum solvency, reliability and guarantee of supply, driving the transition towards a model based on the principles of the circular economy and contributing to the objectives of the European Green Pact.
