My name is Zumrud Gabibulaeva and I come from Dagestan, a picturesque region in the Caucasus rich in tradition and culture. I have been living in the Czech Republic for 16 years and I am one of the artists who are dedicated to reviving the almost forgotten embroidery tradition dating back to the 17th century in the Kaitag district of Dagestan.
This form of art, which blends the influences from both Eastern and Western cultures, is the result of the multi-national traditions of the Caucasus. The embroideries I create are more than just decorative objects – there are sacred talismans filled with deep symbolism and tradition.
The embroidery process is lengthy and demanding, often taking several months, sometimes up to half a year. Each stich, every thread is the fruit of meticulous work that has been passed down from generation to generation, like a family secret. This technique was taught to me by my mother and I lovingly and respectfully continue it, thousands of kilometers away of home, in the heart of Europe.
Each of my embroideries reflects the rich history and spiritual strength of Kaitag. They serve as protective talismans for newborns or as extraordinary jewelry and gifts packaging for brides, who are decorated with Ottoman-style floral and geometric ornaments.
I exhibited my work at KD Nostalgická myš in Šemanovice in 2023. Currently, I am displaying my creations at the Francis Café in Prague 7, where you can view and purchase some of my embroideries. My works have already gained popularity among buyers who like to use them to beautify their homes.
